In his documentary Guggi, director Ian Thuillier shines a light on the life and career of Irish painter, sculptor, and musician Derek Rowen, better known by the nickname Guggi, which his close friend Bono gave him.
It combines archival material with present day footage of the artist and his closest friends Sean Scully, Jim Sheridan, Gavin Friday, and Bono. Guggi has a resonant voice and is such an articulate storyteller, you could listen to him all day.
The film offers great insight into his creative process and, along the way, highlights how profoundly good friends can make one’s life better. Guggi also gave Bono his nickname Bonavox of O’Connell Street.
