Djinn Wedding from Turkish filmmaker Ferit Karahan is not a ghost story, but you can feel a supernatural presence throughout the film.
It is the follow-up to his excellent, equally tragic Brother’s Keeper, and trades that film’s realism for a surrealist approach. It centers on guilt, trauma, and the burdens passed down through generations, following the lives of four siblings in Anatolia.
While not all the details of the characters’ stories are disclosed to the viewer, we can feel their pain all the same. Demet Özdemir and İlhan Şen stand out in an all-around exceptional cast.
The exquisitely shot visuals and the circular narrative Karahan constructs through the use of repeated motifs make Djinn Wedding a captivating watch that provides glimmers of hope despite the gloominess of it all.
