Casper Kelly’s BUDDY has everything going for it. The concept, the script, and the execution are all top notch, and it is genuinely unnerving.
Buddy, a Barney-like TV show character with the appearance of an orange unicorn, gets increasingly unhinged and unleashes terror on the kids and other characters on the set.
I have no personal connection to the type of educational children’s shows depicted here. Even as a kid, I was watching films and series that were made for grown ups whether I had any understanding of what was happening on the screen or not. The sight of these shows are enough to bore me, so that might have prevented me from embracing the film completely.
That said, it is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for good, imaginative horror. It is opening in theaters on August 28th.
