David Wain’s Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a super silly riff on The Wizard of Oz that finds Gail (Zoey Deutch), a naive hairdresser from Kansas, and her companions, played by John Slattery, Ken Marino, Ben Wang, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley, on the streets of LA on a quest to find Jon Hamm. Following a fortune teller’s advice, Gail sets out to get even with her fiancé after he cashes in on the celebrity hall pass he insisted they both agree to.
Your enjoyment of the film will depend on how much you get a kick out of the wacky humor that is on constant display. I had a ball! Deutch embraces the “Dorothyness” of the character, and the whole cast, including many familiar faces who make cameo appearances, are fully on board with the madness.
While there is a sweet story of friendship and camaraderie underneath it all, Wain and co-writer Marino are all about the laughs. the comedy will be in theaters on July 10.
