In Stephanie Laing’s Tow, Rose Byrne is at the top of her game as Amanda, a homeless woman who has been sleeping in her car until a company tows it and demands thousands of dollars from her. With help from young lawyer Kevin (The Holdover’s Dominic Sessa), she works relentlessly to get it back.
The script, which is based on an infuriating true story, is well-structured and maintains a steady pace. The fleshed-out supporting characters are portrayed by a strong cast that includes Octavia Spencer, Ariana DeBose, Elsie Fisher, Demi Lovato, and Simon Rex.
This is the kind of compelling and accessible drama that would have received multiple Oscar nominations 20 years ago before the Academy started shifting its direction. I hope the right distributor picks it up and gives it the proper release it deserves.
