In Jonas Trueba’s separation dramedy, Ale, a director, and Alex, an actor, decide to throw a party to commemorate the occasion. The talkative film was co-written by Trueba and his two leads and is clearly influenced by Bergman and Allen. Bergman and Liv Ullmann’s personal and artistic relationship might have actually been an inspiration for it, as both are referenced several times here and Alex is a frequent collaborator in Ale’s films.
Their passion for one another seems to have diminished, but they still get along so well together, just like their friends and family, I found it hard to wrap my head around why they want to separate. That disconnect kept me at a distance and I thought the film was pleasant, but not particularly engaging.
