The Good Sister – Berlinale 2025

In Sarah Miro Fischer’s Berlinale drama THE GOOD SISTER, Rose (Marie Bloching) and her older brother Sam (Anton Weil) are inseparable. When a woman accuses him of rape and Rose is called to testify, her world is turned upside down. Fischer makes us uncomfortable by putting us in Rose’s shoes and asking the difficult questions.

There are several memorable sequences including a scene where waxing serves as a form of self-punishment and a powerful interrogation scene with a close-up of Rose’s face while the victim’s statement is being read. The latter reminded me of the questionnaire scene in Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The compositions and the sound design stand out. The film stumbles a bit in the final act, but overall it’s a complex and insightful debut that will linger in your mind.
