Sierra Falconer’s SUNFISH (and Other Stories on Green Lake) is a comforting, summery anthology film where the lives of the characters in each segment briefly intertwine.
14-year old Lu learns how to sail a sunfish boat while staying with grandma and grandpa and takes care of a loonlet abandoned by its mother whose story parallels her own. Jun rehearses to get the first chair in the orchestra and competes with an older boy who seems to be a shoo-in. Annie helps a dying fisherman to catch the giant fish he claims to have seen. Sisters Robin and Blue Jay try to run a bed-and-breakfast and make the best of their time together before they have to say their goodbyes.
Hard to believe this was Falconer’s thesis film. It’s a testament to what you can achieve as a filmmaker without having a substantial budget. Makes you wish summer was here so that you can pack your bags and head over there.
