Three quarters into David Mackenzie’s RELAY with Riz Ahmed and Lily James, it was on its way to becoming one of my favorite thrillers of the year. Then the script stumbled and fell apart.
I loved the real NYC locations, the anti-corporate theme, the chemistry between Ahmed and James, and the overall neo-noir feel of it. All of these are wasted giving into the urge to end the film in a certain way without regard for consistency and logic.
Your mileage may vary as I have seen some praises for it, but I left the theater disappointed and angry when 20 minutes prior I was expecting there’d be a smile on my face.
