Omni Loop, which had its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, takes its name from a train line in Miami. It is also a time loop movie.
Faced with her impending death due to a black hole growing inside of her body, scientist Zoya Lowe, played by Mary-Louise Parker, keeps taking a pill that sends her back one week and tries to find a solution that will extend her life with the help of her protégé, Ayo Edebiri’s Paula.
Bernardo Britto’s lo-fi sci-fi is at its most entertaining when Louise-Parker and Edebiri share the screen together. Their chemistry and comedic skills carry the intriguing premise through the bumpy moments. For a film about death, Omni Loop is full of hope and its exquisite finale is both moving and inspirational.
It is arriving in theaters and on demand this week.
