NewFest has announced the lineup of their 35th Edition including many highly anticipated queer films from around the world. The festival will open with George C. Wolfe’s Netflix film RUSTIN that garnered high praise in Toronto for Colman Domingo’s portrayal of the gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.
NYAD from Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin will serve as the U.S. Centerpiece. The film is husband and wife duo’s first foray into narrative features after helming high profile documentaries Free Solo, The Rescue, and Meru. The International Centerpiece is the New York Premiere of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s MONSTER. BEYOND THE AGGRESSIVES: 25 YEARS LATER, Daniel Peddle’s follow-up to his film The Aggressives, is the Documentary Centerpiece.
The Closing Night Film is Andrew Haigh’s ALL OF US STRANGERS, which premiered in Telluride to rave reviews. Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy, and Jamie Bell star. Haigh is no stranger to NewFest. His feature Weekend was the Narrative Centerpiece of the festival in 2011.
Todd Haynes will receive the Queer Visionary Award and his latest film MAY DECEMBER with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore will screen at the festival.
Sundance favorites EILEEN from William Oldroyd and FANCY DANCE from Erica Tremblay are included. Luke Gilford’s NATIONAL ANTHEM with Charlie Plummer and Hannah Pearl Utt’s CORA BORA are two from this year’s SXSW. Berlinale films THE LOST BOYS; ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY; and HUMMINGBIRDS are also part of the lineup.
