There have been some wonderful sad films at Tribeca this year. Writer/director Lauren Meyering’s confident debut HORSEGIRLS is one that manages to uplift and constantly make you laugh thanks to a clever script and the incredible performance of autistic actress Lillian Carrier as Margarita. Gretchen Mol breaks your heart as her ailing mother, who relentlessly tries to prepare her for life after she’s gone.
Meyering’s screenplay is based on producer Mackenzie Breeden’s own experiences and builds towards a remarkably poignant ending that resonates.
