Fantasia’s 28th edition will take place from July 18th to August 4th, 2024. The beloved film festival focuses on genre films, but there are always some great dramas to be discovered alongside the horror and sci-fi standouts that people will be talking about in coming months.
The festival will open with Ant Timpon’s adventure movie BOOKWORM. It reunites the director with Elijah Wood, the star of his previous film Come To Daddy.
THE COUNT OF MONTE-CRISTO from directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte had great word-of-mouth coming out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May and is included in this year’s Fantasia lineup. Pierre Niney plays the title character.
Ahead of its theatrical release, Tilman Singer’s CUCKOO with Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, and Jessica Henwick will also screen at the festival. It had its premiere at the Berlinale and was part of the SXSW lineup.
Another SXSW selection, Damian McCarthy’s ghost story ODDITY, is his follow-up to 2020’s Caveat and is hailed as one of the best horror films of the year.
YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann’s feature debut SHELBY OAKS has recently been acquired by NEON. The supernatural horror mystery stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, and Michael Beach and will have its World Premiere at Fantasia.
Cheap Thrills and Small Crimes director E.L. Katz’s cult horror AZRAEL with Samara Weaving, Vic Carmen Sonne, and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett had debuted at SXSW and will have its Canadian Premiere at the festival.
Jeremy Clapin follows up I Lost My Body with the sci-fi mystery MEANWHILE ON EARTH from this year’s Berlinale. Megan Northam’s character is contacted by an alien three years after his brother went missing during a space mission.
These and much more will be in store for the lucky Fantasia audiences this year. Looking forward to watching some of the films and posting coverage of them here.
