Family Therapy – Tribeca 2024

The strange family dynamics, absurd plot points, and the use of classical music in Sonja Prosenc’s FAMILY THERAPY show the influence of early Yorgos Lanthimos films. There are also nods to Jacques Tati such as the modern architecture, nuns walking by, and a small dog running around. Another similarity to both directors is that the film is made up almost entirely of fixed or handheld static shots.

I thoroughly enjoyed this consistently funny and weird eat-the-rich satire about a stepson moving in with a bourgeois family of three. I will seek out Prosenc’s previous films.
