Everything’s Going To Be Great, Jon S. Baird’s follow-up to Tetris, is a funny 80s-set drama about a theater family. It reunites Allison Janney with I, Tonya screenwriter Steven Rogers, who helped her win an Oscar for that film.
As expected Bryan Cranston and Janney are great, but young actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is the real MVP here. Simon Rex continues his recent streak of fun supporting turns and I loved seeing Laura Benanti as an imaginary Tallulah Bankhead.
The film should appeal to a wide audience, but theater people will dig it the most. It’s not overly sentimental, yet the final scene caught me off guard and brought out some tears.
Lionsgate will release it in theaters on June 20.
