If it wasn’t for the modern setting and the familiar actors, you could possibly be convinced that certain scenes in Mickey Reece’s Every Heavy Thing were from a super-low budget, never released serial killer film De Palma made right around the same time as Blow Out.
In it, a newspaper ad salesman witnesses a murder and has to adhere to killer’s demands in order to stay alive. Reece keeps things interesting by adding technological themes and psychedelic dream/fantasy sequences to standard serial killer tropes.
The talented cast that includes Josh Fadem, James Urbaniak, Barbara Crampton, and Vera Drew and comedic elements such as a Darth Vader-like serial killer and a semi-automatic shotgun model named Chekhov’s XX A.R.M. KYK Tactical also elevate the material.
