I don’t like heights, but love watching films about them like Man On Wire, The Walk, and Free Solo. SKYWALKERS: A LOVE STORY is another nerve-racking one that made me shout multiple times. It is gorgeously filmed and has a lovely romance at its center. It will be in IMAX theaters on July 12 and will […]
Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple – Tribeca 2024
Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple is a fascinating and comprehensive documentary on the legendary Little Steven. It starts with his early life in New Jersey and takes an in-depth look at his entire career. His time with the E-Street Band, his own band The Disciples of Soul, his acting roles in The Sopranos and Lilyhammer, and […]
Seattle International Film Festival Streaming Week
Streaming week of Seattle International Film Festival is here! They have a great selection of films from around the world. Marija Kavtaradze’s Slow, one of my favorites from the past year, is one of them. Other highlights include Victor Erice’s Close Your Eyes, Jeanne Herry’s All Your Faces, Ari Folman’s animated feature Where Is Anne […]
Silver Haze
Silver Haze reunites director Sacha Polak with the star of her previous film Dirty God, Vicky Knight, who, like her character, is a burn survivor in real life. It’s a messy, but worthwhile film about trauma, anger, human connections, and ultimately forgiveness. It is streaming via OutFest LA.
Egghead and Twinkie
Sarah Kambe Holland’s EGGHEAD & TWINKIE is an entertaining coming out/coming-of-age road adventure comedy with lively animation spread in. If you are looking for a feel-good movie with queer Asian representation, head over to the Outfest LA virtual platform, where it is screening this week only.
The Mattachine Family
THE MATTACHINE FAMILY is a story of found family in the gay community, a love letter to Los Angeles, and a showcase for Nico Tortorella. I wish it had fewer clichés, but it should satisfy most of its core audience. It is streaming this week via Outfest LA.
Chasing Chasing Amy
I was only mildly interested in Outfest Closing Night selection CHASING CHASING AMY when I first heard about it. Director Sav Rodgers’ film turned out to be both a beautiful love story and an unexpectedly revelatory making-of documentary. It is available to watch on Outfest virtual platform this week.
T Blockers
If indie queer horror sounds like your thing, head over to Outfest virtual platform to watch 18-year-old Australian director Alice Maio Mackay’s T Blockers. Creating a visually and thematically satisfying film on a shoestring budget, she seems ready to helm a studio project. Hope it happens soon!
Break The Game
BREAK THE GAME is a compelling documentary with a lot on its mind including transphobia, depression, cyberbullying, social media addiction, and romance. I think it will give hope to people who find themselves in a dark place from time to time. Streaming as part of Outfest LA virtual lineup.
Commitment To Life
COMMITMENT TO LIFE from I Am Divine director Jeffrey Schwarz chronicles the AIDS crisis with an emphasis on Los Angeles. Even if you are familiar with the era, you will likely find some of the material revealing. The well-executed documentary is part of the Outfest virtual lineup this week.
