Winner of the Best International Feature Award at Tribeca Festival, BIKECHESS finds comedy in the absurdities of everyday life amid constant government propaganda in Kazakhstan.
It follows TV reporter Dina, the married cameraman she is having an affair with, and her lesbian activist sister while they have to deal with authority figures and a narrow-minded public.
Writer-director Assel Aushakimova has a knack for dry humor and manages to be both thought-provoking and amusing despite the film’s leisurely pace. She chooses to end the film rather abruptly after an incident takes place that will change Dina’s life. One cannot help but wonder how she would react to that incident, which could potentially be more interesting than everything that preceded it, if Aushakimova decided to explore it.
