Dana Flor’s 1-800-ON-HER-OWN is a very intimate documentary that showcases the successes as well as the struggles and insecurities of the DIY artist Ani DiFranco.
It chronicles the queer singer-songwriter’s career from the 90s to today and captures her on stage, on the road, and at home. There is plenty of good music. We witness her collaboration with Bon Iver, the first time she co-wrote a song with anybody.
She talks about her difficult childhood in Buffalo, NY, how overturning of Roe v Wade affected her, and female artists having to tour all the time to pay the bills. It is worth seeing for fans of the artist and music documentaries.
