Kate Winslet’s directorial debut Goodby June, written by her son Joe Anders, covers similar territory to Azazel Jacobs’ His Three Daughters.
I loved how they were able to infuse laugh-out-loud moments into a gloomy atmosphere in the beginning. As the film progresses, it leans more into drama than comedy and never quite reaches the heights of its opening sequence again.
Winslet can direct, the cast is fantastic, and the script is impressive considering it is Anders’ first at a young age. Like many others in the audience, I was moved, but I wanted the humorous tone at the start to stick around for most of the film.
