Nia DaCosta’s Ibsen adaptation HEDDA, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month, is on Prime Video.
DaCosta changes the character of Eilert to Eileen and has other surprises in store for those familiar with Ibsen’s play.
Tessa Thompson and Nina Hoss are exhilarating to watch. Hildur Guðnadóttir’s percussion-heavy jazz score fuels the tension on display. I loved hearing the band at the party play Björk’s It’s Oh So Quiet. I wish it went on for longer than it did.
The set design and the costumes are ravishing, and there’s a very memorable scene with a Spike Lee double-dolly shot.
