Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value is the most compelling drama of the year so far. He is able to bring out career-best performances from the talented ensemble cast of Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård, and Elle Fanning.
He and his writing partner Eskil Vogt have crafted a tight, pitch-perfect script, containing little details such as a label above the stove telling you what other filmmakers might devote an entire sequence to explaining.
Among the many highlights for me were an absolutely hilarious scene involving DVDs and a beautiful beach sequence that brings Fellini to mind.
The light-filled visuals are exquisite, and as usual with his films, there are wonderful musical choices, including the oh-so uplifting Cannock Chase by Labi Siffre.
Without relying on clichés, Trier gets under your skin throughout the film and still manages to catch you off guard with an ending that sneaks up on you.
