Alice Douard’s wonderful Cannes 2025 drama Love Letters captures the ups and downs of an expecting lesbian couple during the months leading up to the birth of their daughter.
Douard was inspired by her own experiences and depicts the bureaucracy Céline and Nadia have to endure and their familial interactions with a lot of heart and humor.
Ella Rumpf, who many will recognize from Julie Ducournau’s Raw, is electrifying as Céline, portraying her insecurities and strengths with remarkable depth. Monia Chokri and Noémie Lvovsky are also terrific. Raphaël Hamburger’s unique, mostly electronic score perfectly accompanies Jacques Girault’s lively visuals.
The final couple of scenes bring a smile to your face and end the film on a moving note.
