Maldoror – Venice 2024

Fabrice Du Welz’s latest, loosely based on serial killer, rapist, and pedophile Marc Dutroux’s case, is David Fincher meets John Frankenheimer with some added Tarantino revisionism. It is set in the 90s, but the feel is pure 70s and fans of crime films from that era should definitely keep the film on their radars.

Anthony Bajon plays Paul Chartier, a gendarme obsessed with finding two missing girls to the point of ruining his own life. It is a very different character than the cop he played in Romain Gavras’ Athena two years ago. The exceptional ensemble cast includes his Athena co-star Alexis Manenti, Alba Gaïa Bellugi, Sergi López, and Béatrice Dalle.

Frequent Du Welz collaborators cinematographer Manuel Dacosse and composer Vincent Cahay contribute to the film’s grim atmosphere with dark and beautiful visuals and a memorable retro score. It is gripping and disturbing. It will next screen at Fantastic Fest later this month.
