Mexico 86 – Locarno 2024

In MEXICO 86 from director César Díaz, Bérénice Bejo’s Maria is a revolutionary activist fighting for Guatemalan liberation, who has to flee to Mexico and leave her infant son behind to be raised by her mother. 

It is based on Díaz’s and his mother’s experiences and the film is dedicated to her. He constructs a revealing and suspenseful thriller that centers on a mother-son relationship. Bejo displays Maria’s struggles captivatingly as she is torn between her duties and her son. 

The skillfully crafted film gives the viewer a lot to ponder about ideals and sacrifices necessary to stick with them.
